Volunteer for Grow

At Grow, we would not be able to operate without the support of our volunteers. There are many different ways that you can help us at Grow.

Grow Volunteers

How is GROW funded?

GROW is funded a combination of:

  1. Government service level agreement with Employment and Social Security
  2. Sales from Grow produce and services
  3. Donations & fundraising (FrOGs)
Why does GROW need volunteers?

GROW needs volunteers:

  • To operate safely we need the lowest possible ratios of staff to crew
  • To support the staff team, allowing time for training and development opportunities
  • To bring in team members with a diverse number of skills, communication styles to compliment the staff team
  • to enable GROW to expand into new service areas which it would be unable to do without a solid volunteer base
Where do we need volunteers?
  1. Friends of Grow (FrOGs) Volunteers are needed at Committee level and also to support at events, flag days, etc.
  2. Horticulture - to assist in our vinery, with produce and contracted maintenance (e.g. Castle Cornet, Candie Gardens).
  3. Flourish Training café - volunteer help in the kitchen and front of house
  4. Workshop
  5. Retail – in The Crafty Frog retail space
  6. Administration & facilities
  7. Training & development
  8. GROW board & sub committees

GROW would prefer all those volunteering to have experience in an area of volunteer interest e.g. horticulture, retail, café or workshop, this may be either personal or professional experience as long as you have a passion for that area.

All GROW volunteers will be provided with a uniform. Depending on the area in which you volunteer you may be expected to dress differently depending on your day e.g. vinery – steel toe capped shoes, café – hair tied back. You will be advised further on application.

During your time volunteering you will get to know some of our crew, but it is important to remember to keep an appropriate physical distance and guard against oversharing personal information. You will be provided with training and guidance during your induction process. If you do have any concerns, please speak to a member of staff who will always be available.

Grow takes the safety of crew, staff and volunteers very seriously. You will be asked to undertake safeguarding training during your induction period. Please ensure you have also read the GROW Safeguarding Policy.

Grow expects its volunteers to keep any personal information they may learn about any person who they work alongside at GROW’ (crew, staff or volunteers) entirely confidential. GROW takes very seriously any breach of this expectation and may investigate this formally should it occur. Should a crew member or staff disclose information that you have concerns about, please speak to one of the managers who will always be available.

If you are unwell it is probably best not to attend. This is, partly to protect your health but also the health of GROW crew, staff and volunteers. Some of our GROW team have health vulnerabilities which make them overly susceptible to infection so although you may feel you would like to attend so you do not let us down, we would prefer that you stayed at home. Please ensure you contact the office on [email protected] or 711600 as soon as possible.

If you are a regular volunteer, GROW may start to rely somewhat on your presence, especially if you generally support a particular day or time.  In such cases could you please notify GROW of your absence in advance in order for us to find appropriate cover. Please ensure you contact the office on
or 711600

GROW expects all volunteers to have an up to date “Basic Disclosure” from the Guernsey Police Disclosure and Vetting Unit (which operates out of the Guernsey Border Agency Offices at the New Jetty, White Rock, St Peter Port, Guernsey GY1 1LL). This means that you will have to visit the Disclosure and Vetting Unit in person between 9am and 3pm, complete and submit the required form, have your passport or drivers’ license copied and pay the fee of £20 (please note that the payment of this fee can be refunded by GROW if required).  Grow can provide further information.
Stage 1

Obtain your “Basic Disclosure” and ensure a copy is sent to GROW’ registered office at Grow Ltd, Les Petits Quartier Vinery, Coutanchez, St Sampsons, GY2 4GE with a copy (if possible) to GROW’ email address [email protected]

Stage 2

Complete the “Application Form” set out at the end of this document and send it to GROW’ registered office (as described above) with a copy (if possible) to GROW’ email address [email protected]

Stage 3

Once GROW has received your Basic Disclosure and your Application Form, they will be considered by the Management team at GROW and you will be notified whether or not your application has been accepted

Stage 4

If your application has been successful, you will be invited to attend for a tour and discussion around which service area you would like to volunteer.

Yes, there are always two managers on site and a supervisor (staff) in the service area you are volunteering in.

GROW has employee liability insurance which covers the people who volunteer for GROW. GROW’s insurance also covers public liability too.

This will depend on the area you are volunteering in. For example it would be useful to have catering knowledge in the kitchen, or customer experience for front of house or a basic understanding of plants for the vinery.

On the whole our most important skill needed is clear communication with crew and staff and a passion for working with people with learning disabilities or difficulties such as autism and ADHD.

Depending on the nature of your role as a volunteer your training might differ from someone else’s. Working with FrOGs will require less training than working alongside Crew in the café for example.

Volunteer’s training needs will be identified on application/induction and then annually, and training provided in accordance. Volunteer meetings will be held at intervals throughout the year where generic training may be delivered.

GROW may ask you to complete some online training such as:

  • Manual handling
  • Fire awareness
  • Safeguarding
  • Disability awareness
  • Food safety and hygiene if appropriate

Face to face training may include:

  • Emergency first aid at work
  • Epilepsy awareness

This will depend on the nature of the incident, but ultimately the management of the incident is the responsibility of the staff and management of GROW.  Some of our crew have additional health issues (such as epilepsy) which, if you are working alongside them, you will have a basic awareness of.  Should an incident occur the staff will support the crew member, volunteers may be asked to support other crew while the incident is being managed.  Inexperienced volunteers will not be expected to manage incidents.

All incidents should be recorded on a GROW Incident Report Form and reported to a manager.
